Bolt action guns are awesome, and the Remington 700 is one of the best ones to start with. Not too expensive, lots of 'toys' for it, and it's a well built gun.

well ya i know that but i wont join for 2 years. and i love shooting. almost as much as driving and working on cars, and i want some thing for now.
You're going to buy the rifle and not join for 2 years? LOL sounds like someone is playing Fantasy-Marine. You don't hear too many business majors going for this kind of field now-a-days, you do realise you're literally handing your entire life over to the government for~8 yearsright?

BTW Marines NEVER call a rifle a gun, didn't you see Full Metal Jacket?

well i dont want to join just to be a sniper. to be honest i dont like business but i chose that because i didnt know what else i was good at. i dont want to sit inside and work and i have always been interested in the military. i wont join tell after i graduate from college if i even join.
Jeff, what about automotive engineering (or something that will get you working on cars)? It seems a natural fit for you. I have a buddy that has a degree in mechanical engineering and worked for Goodyear test driving cars.

I'm going for mechanical engineering...ultimately I want to work on chassis design, but for right now I'm going to work for a company designing clutches and torque converters. Engineering is going to keep me close to cars...that's the goal anyways.

Ive got a 243 and I love to shoot it, although if you want something with a little bit more range and accuracy get a 7mm mag, Ive shot one before and its and great gun to shoot, exceptionally accurate and packs a lot of punch.Big recoil though. Cyberlogic M16s, M4s and AR15s shoot 223 rounds not 5.56!!!

Go to a GI Joes if you have one around where u live, if they don't have it in stock in the store, they can special order any gun for you.
