RE: Learned to shoot over the weekend
My usual range allows .50AE, but nobody ever shoots it. The first gun I shot was a 9mm H&K P7M8. I like 9mm, and don't get me wrong - its a good round - but I like .45ACP better. While 9mm recoil has a lot of whip, the .45 has alot more push.
Since you are a CA guy, your gun options are limited. I doubt the USC is even legal here, not to mention it likely costs over $2000. You might consider a Mosin-Nagnat M44 rifle. Its a good bolt gun, plenty of kick and will prepare you when you move down to smaller calibers like .308.
For me, I already know my first handgun is going to be a Springfield Armory 1911A1 Mil-spec edition with the stainless steel finish.

Since when does Bent live in Canada?
And yeah, I'm sure you are buying these carbines for personal protection. That'd look great, somebody attacks you on your premises, and you put like 18 bullets in them. Yeah. Criminals have way to many rights, I'd be afraid to shoot them.
I'd buy a sword... that'd be sweet.
EDIT: my 'criminals have way too many rights' comment could very well come under the torch... so just read on by, don't think about it too much, and come up with arguments. I'm well aware.

I own two hand guns,
An H&K (Heckler and Koch) Compact .40 Var.1 (my ccw)
and a .50 IMI Desert Eagle
I also have a AK47(assult), an AR180b (sniper rifle), and a russian made Dragnov .308 Extreme Sniper rifle
along with some stupid guns like a few shot guns and rifles.
Hand guns are my favorite to shoot. The AR180b sniper rifle is probably my second favorite.
HK^ after a good night at work

I love the feel of an .45 APC, favorite carry how ever? .40
Higher velocity for penetration power than a .45 and also I can carry more, but packs more weight than a 9mm, and the +P+ rounds I have will push thru class III body armor with out any problem.
PS Lets not get on the topic of 9mm<40<45<50 bullshit, it is all relevent to the applicatoin.
