It's not the gas companies, it's the gas stations thatare doing it. The station owners are getting hit even harder than we are by this, and many of them are selling fuel at a loss. Back when gas was cheap ($1-1.50 a gallon) they were making nearly $0.25 per gallon in profit. Now, they are barely making $0.03 per gallon in profit. That's why so many gas stations are closing.
