So summer is just around the corner = mo' money and time

Having said this, I want to do some of my own work on my car. Can I just pick up a bentley manual or automotive guide from barnes and noble to educate myself? Will a couple of books do me fine? Better yet, can I just read DIY? or should I take classes before I start tinkering? What advantages does a formal automotive education provide over someone who is self-taught?

Thanks

formal automotive education is good if you intend going into the trade but it goes real deep, self-taught wont get you a job in the franchise because you need the certificates but its good to DIY if your not considering the trade of mechanic and there are many sites to learn from "like this one" to gain the required knowledge and the books help

DIY isn't that hard. I'm "self-taught," if you could call it that. I do all the work on my car. It's diagnosis that's hard to do.

excellent question.
On the same theme, what's a good book to learn a certain A4 engine. I assume the Bentley manuals are simply reference?

I;ve done a lot of work on other cars, but they're all different. Before you work on the car, you need to learn it. I've had my A4 for a couple weeks... I gotta learn it.

BTW, impaler2383, are you Romanian? your avatar is the romanian flag, thats why I ask.
I am romanian too BTW [8D]

Learn the basics

That is a pretty good site to learn the VERY basics. You can pick up some good stuff there.
