Help me out with a new Bike!
My father in-law is a bike freak. He likes to buy people bikes as gifts... Whatever... I need/want one and he is offering to get me one for Xmas. I'm just guessing it's going to be in the $300 range. I know that you can't get a very nice bike for that, but at least something pretty decent which is all I need. So if you guys can recommend what you think the best bike for ~$300 is then that would be cool. We are going to look this weekend.

Its got a nice solid fork up front, I think its cast iron, a good 3/4" of suspension travel, and in total, a featherweight 33lb bicycle.

Achttung, that bike looks too nice to be $50. It must be stolen. Thanks... Yeah, mountain bike is what I'd like. I'd like to build one, but there is no way I'll get all the parts needed for ~$300. Kolbs, a multi speed GT? Like a beach bike? lol?
I've never heard of Barracuda, but this one seems pretty alright:

Oh I just noticed it doesn't have Shimano gearing and has the twist style gear shift. **** that.

If I had 300 to buy a bike, I'd be looking circa 1999.
Seriously, pick up an aging Trek 8900 or something... You'll find it for that price, and even though it's 10 years old, if it's been maintained (or seldom used) it'll beat the SNOT out of a 300 dollar bike today.
My brother has a 1998 Trek 8900 that, if he sold, it'd go for about that... he's not selling, but you get the idea. Killer bike, regardless of age. Plus, the '98 is a freaking iconic bike! First production dual-disk hardtail! Woot! His 10 year old Hayes discs work as good as new.
