Default Family is getting a newer car

so here is the deal, my fathers old Explorer has finally gotten on it's last legs and we are now searching for its replacment. So I was wondering what you all thought we should replace it with.

currently I'm pursuing two routes or replacments
1) Another truck/ SUV something that can tow and that he can through things in the back of since he does do a lot of work that involves dirt, wet grass, mud, etc. (he's an architect and helps with my old Boy Scout troop on campouts so the vehicle can get dirty)

But my mom and him are considering just making our Freestyle (yeah another Ford I'm not sure why we have so many) into the work vehicle and then getting another car for the family instead

so here is the current garage
2007 Ford Freestyle
1996 Audi A4 (mine)
1998 Mitsubishi Galant (older sisters)
1992 Ford Explorer (ran great and had a good life but it needs to die soon)

And What should we add, it would be used probably somewhere around 15K-20K max price tag and unfortunately probably will be an auto.

for option one I was thinking either a Chevy 2500 or a Ford F-250
for option two I'm thinking B6 vert. and maybe trying to push the S4 into the line up. So what is the AF's thoughts on the matter.

Also what can you find a good B6 for these days?

TIA

If you want to get another SUV and go a little smaller than the Explorer with better gas mileage, consider a Toyota Highlander. The 2008 is a new body style, so any 2007 and earlier have gone down in price. We like ours.

An Avant could work, but the Q7 would almost definitely be out of the price range.

The thing about getting an S4 is if they get a B6, it'll probably have fairly high mileage (if you stay with that price range), and if you get a B5 you'll be paying out the *** for maintenance at one point or another...

B6 A4 gets my vote.

Good ideas so far and yeah I realized with that budget a good b6S4 probably will not be found and I am the only member of my family who really likes Avants so that is out for now unless I can convince them otherwise.

As for the small SUV idea, that is what we are getting for my little sis in a few months but that is a surprise I think right now so that one is on the DL.

keep the idea coming

i googled the ford freestyle and that doesn't look much like a "work" suv for wet grass/dirt and hauling.
i'd get a truck for that kind of stuff, maybe a smaller one like bogie said.

I might have my own motives for why I want the big truck but he is also considering a Land Rover Range Rover, so who knows what we will end up getting.

But yes, I agree the freestyle is not a work vehicle at all, that is my moms plan so she can get the convertible "for him" but as I'm sure we all know she'll end up driving it all the time.

it should always be "all about mom"!!!

you could always try to sell the ford freestyle and get the pick up, then buy a convertible for mom and a mini suv for sis and EVERYONE WINS!
