Default Cold Air Intake = Fail

Today we had a VW GTI with the VR6 in it come in because it was making a knocking noise. Well it had an AEM cold air intake on it that goes all the way down to the front of the wheel. Well the customer said this all happend after he was going through a car wash and the car died. Turns out it sucked in water from the car wash and bent a rod very badly. This is actually the second car we have had come in with one of those intakes on them the last one was a civic with the same problem. The civic ended up cracking the block while it was at it though. Moral of the story is Cold Air Intakes are bad! Well at least if they reach down to the ground for cold air.

Here's how badly it bent it.

Holy crap - lesson learned huh? Nothing like a CWI (cold water intake) to boost your GTI's performance

The sad thing is he is a guy with at least 2 kids and he I think bought the car with the kit on it. He is taking my advice of just using a k&n filter in the stock box. He wanted the stock box anyways and I know most people say it doesn't make much if any difference to have the CAI by K&N so why not just use the panel filter. I think the guy just wants his car back he wasn't totally worried about having a street performance car just a fun DD so were just replacing the connecting rods and calling it a day.
