RE: Calling all computer geeks
If you're want to build your pc, I recommend getting the parts from Newegg. I've built gaming pc's with most of the parts from them and not have any issues, plus they'll ship your items pretty fast.
The good thing about building your own is knowing what you have in your pc case and can save a lot of $$$ having the components that you want. The last gaming pc I built was over 3 years ago, I spent $2300 for everything inluding a 19" crt monitor and surround speakers. After building it, I compared it with Alienware, Dell's highest end gaming pc, Falcon and other gaming pc's out there. The components I have were better and cost me $1100 less. To this day, I still use it to play online game such as BF2, WoW, DoD Source without a hiccup.
Depending on what you will be using the pc for, you can build a really nice non-gaming for cheap compare to namebrands

OK heres the scoop!
Deffinately use the AMD chip duel core chip.
Deffinately use the brand called ASUS for a moto board.
Deffinately use ATLEAST 2gig ram.
Deffinately use a SATA2 HDD pref 250gig or higher.
Now for the video card i prefer NVIDIA cards over ATI's cards ive used both and find NVIDIA's quality is a better performer and make sure it is a higher end one mostly for gaming purposes.
P.S. for the case i would go with a lian-li case myself.
Ive built many boxes for myself and others and have been doint it for a good many years.
If you need further assistance you can email me at vizierspty@bellsouth.net
Oh by the way if it puts your mind at ease for my abilities i work for pepsico.

Yea. Dont know if anyone got the wrong impression from where I/others were going, but I'm not really a gamer or anything. I'm not gunna be running any insane programs or doing a WHOLE lot on it. Just wanted to basicly speed it up cause we all know what happens to computers as they age. Just wanted to put a little umph in the performance/ speed it ran at. Thank you to all who gave me ANY info. All greatly appreciated. I was planning on building a computer late next semester and now I have basically all the general info ill ever need. So rock on peoples. I'm def going through with the memory upgrade within 2-3 weeks, and the external hard drive will be built/ bought soon afterwards.
Yo... you know the new pepsi flavors that are coming out??? Pleasee do share.

make sure the memory you add MATCHES the memory you have, or it may not work as advertised. It's not like batteries, where, as long as its Al-Kaline (whatta ball player, huh? So good they named a type of battery after him[8D]) it'll be ok.
and, if any of you are gonna do teh DIY external HDD I outlined, above, and need help, feel free to PM me your ph# and I'll call and walk-you-through...

The nice thing about the ones I've built, as outlined above, is that they're USB-bus-powered. No need for external power. If you're a "road-warrior," as I sometimes am, you'll appreciate the fact that you DON'T need to find a plug to make your external functional, of course, it WILL run your battery down faster, so type rilly, rilly fast, when you're using it
