Default The best RPM for shifting the gear?

Hi
I am wondering at what RPM is best to shift the gear to have longlife for engine, turbo and gear?
I am reading and talking with people ,and there is the conclusions that I get:

I have Audi A4 Avant 1.9 tdi 96 kw, 6 gear, 2004 year, 148000 km behind,
When the car is cold I am not passing more than 1900 RPM to shift the gear, pressing accelerator very slowly and driving as higher gear as posible and riding on abt 1500 RPM. When the engine is warm ,on 90 C, then I am accelerating faster but not with full accelerator and shifting the gear on abt 2200 to 2500 RPM and keeping abt 2000 RPM, that I am doing in town, but out of town accelerating even faster and shifting the gear up to 2500-3000 RPM and cruising on 1900-2200 RPM, of course at higher gear as posible. On the hills I like to rev up engine with full accelerator on higher gear, and not less than 2000 RPM to go. With this style the consumption of diesel is satisfactory, in town is going from 7 to 9 liters per 100km, outside is going from 5 to 6 litres per 100km.
Before I had a Passat with 1.9 tdi PD 85 kw, in begining I drove it like grandfather, and after 40000km I had problem with turbo and the mechanics told me that my style of driving caused that problem.
So I would like to know your experience and advices.

Some *general* guidelines:

Waaaaaaaaaay more info than ou asked for:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission

In general, you hafta use a combination of, literally, "playing it by ear," and your God-given "BUTT-DYNO." Your basic understanding is fundamentally sound. Changing gears at lower shift points, while teh engine is cold (your car HAS an oil-temp guage, yes?) will generally make your engine last longer, presuming you do your regular maintainance and such, of course.

Into the middle-rpm-range for normal driving, once the engine warms up (again, you have an oil-temp guage, right?).

And, for those times when your testosterone-level exceeds your common-sense... Shifting JUST BEFORE everything goes BANG!!!

...and your oil all empties out onto the pavement/tarmac, is recommended.

Rev until your pistons come out of your exhaust then shift gear and pull over, call tow truck and ride back on the passenger seat of the tow truck.

Under normal driving conditions, if I'm accellerating to highway speed or just don't feel like wasting time, I shift at about 3k RPM, because about that's where my torque peaks (AFC 12v SOHC 2.8L V6 - peak torque 184ft/lbs @ 3200 RPM); othewise if I'm just getting up to 25/30/35 mph on city streets and I'm in no hurry (or the engine is not warmed up), 2000-2500RPM up to third gear, and then more often than not I'll skip fourth and put it in fifth to cruise.

your style of driving also means you need to cool the car down before you shut it off and let the car warm up before you drive it.

You need to shift higher... Your looking at trying to produce a shift that drops the rpms ~400-500 below your peak torque... ie: if a shift drops you 1000, then shift around 3800. Your trying to keep the rpms in the engine torque range, not below it like your doing. Every engine/tranny combo is different so you need to experiment.

I usually shift when the rev hits the red and goes back down and hits the red again. That's when you know it's time to shift.
