CHICAGO (Reuters) - A 64-year-old bank robber whose three sons turned him in to police after recognizing him in pictures taken by a bank security camera was sentenced on Thursday to 40 years in prison, authorities said.
William Ginglen had pleaded guilty to seven bank robberies that netted some $56,000 and two counts of using a firearm to commit an act of violence.
Ginglen cried during the sentencing and issued a short apology, said Patrick Chesley, the U.S. Attorney in central Illinois.
A former U.S. Marine and respected auxiliary police officer in the town of Lewistown, Ginglen left behind a detailed diary of robberies, cocaine use, spending sprees on a long-time mistress and hiring prostitutes.
Though his father wore a surgical mask during the robberies, his son Jared, a police officer, quickly recognized him and the silver-plated handgun given to him by the sons as a gift.
The three brothers agreed to confront their father, and notified police. Ginglen was arrested in August 2004.
"They realized it was the right thing to do before someone got hurt," said DeWitt County Sheriff Roger Massey, who set up a Web site with the images to get tips about a string of small-town bank robberies that began in November 2003.
"I think they feel bad for their mother, because she is the true victim in this thing," Massey added.
