I hate mutual funds... and most have not fared so well recently. The idea of a mutual fund is based on safety though... but yeah, not a good idea for the short term. Certainly can't make a hobby out of them.

Haha, yeah, stocks are definately a lot of fun... I just worry about people taking them too seriously. My stocks can go down 5K in a day, and I won't notice... you haven't really LOST money, until you sell for less than you paid...

Or they go bankrupt. That too.

a really easy to comprehend source for beginning is the Wall Street Journal Guide to... series. these are about 100 page books that break down financial terms, what to expect from certain invesments, etc. Also, get a dictionary of financial terms. Companies use lawyers to write their quarterly statement fine print and if you can decipher it, that will help you to decide if you want to invest in that company, keep your current stocks with them or dump that junk before they belly up.

IRA, money market, and mutuals are all good but are very safe and if you want to make money look elsewhere.

Junk bonds, commodities, currency are all much more risky but the rewards can be worth it

My advice would be to start with mutual funds or some company that u knwo alot about and follow. Liek Apple when they were coming out with the nano and now the video ipod. Or like toyota when they came out with the priuis. My friend's dad took some advice from me (indirectly) b/c i was say how all the ppl from teh hurricanes should buy RVs he invested in 3 companies. In 3 weeks made over 300%. He was very happy about that. The thing that sucks is i told my dad to do the same thing and he didnt think it would make any money.
