For those of you looking for lens information, ratings, and such, go to http://www.photodo.com/products.html and do some research. This site has very experienced folk rating lenses.
At least it's another source for your research, FWIW.

so josh I ended up getting the 55-200 kinda as a place holder until I have the disposable income for the 70-300 or by then probably the 80-200/2.8 (I'm actually quite happy with the 55-200, I just wish it AF'd a tad bit quicker when I'm on a boat)
now my next big question (and it's one I've kinda answered for myself already but want some others input (all photo people are welcome to weigh in)
Next purchases:
Nikon 50/1.8D + Nikon SB600 (or used SB800)
or
Nikon 20/2.8
I love wide angle shots and use my kit lens a lot more towards the 18mm end of the range right now, but I can see the usefulness of having a standard Prime which does take great shots and also having a real flash instead of just the little pop-up on.
so Photo people what is your vote?
as a side note, don't worry after this next purchase the next step before anymore glass is to get a D90 body, sell the D60 + glass, get a 18-200mmVR to replace the two lenses. It all depends on how much I make this summer and what else I decide to burn my hard earned cash on.

What are you going to be mainly taking pictures of with those lenses? That will depend on which one you get. And the SB600 is a good flash. If you can, look into the 900. I have that one and it's awesome!!!!
My next glass purchase will be the 16-85mm VR lens and then the 10.5mm fisheye, then the D300 body.... Dang... thats almost another $3k in glass and camera....

probably portraits, landscapes, buildings, etc. just kinda like a walk around lens. While I love wide angle shots, I would love to have some good low light ability for parties and generally just walking around for life at night with a 50mm could be kinda fun, but then again so could the 20.
I'm leaning towards the nifty50 and flash option because having a good flash could be very useful.
and I understand the , it's an expensive hobby that I got to add to my list of already expensive hobbies.

Wouldn't really worry about the SB-900 unless u plan on using it professionally CAB...way to complicated buncha buttons and totally uncess for average enthusiast.
No pun intended paintballguy.

what do you mean it has to many buttons? It has basically the same control layout as the SB600 (plus controls to be a master flash), it is just a better flash that is the one I eventually want to get because it would easily fill long range shots. I'm kinda confused, are you saying it's pointless for someone who this is a hobby for to get a hotshoe flash?

Sorta.....
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb900.htm
I shot with one last weekend I didn't really like it way to bulky for me.I am saying why waste that extra cash when you can put it towards a lens. All I am saying.
And it's not the same control layout...have you seen it up close? The dials are megagay and try looking at those in the dark.

^^interesting, oddly enough it never occurred to me that Ken Rockwell would review flashes also (I'm being serious just in case that comes out sarcastic or something) and it was a good read. As I said I'd figure I'd start with the SB600 and see where I go from there, snooping around his site I found a little something that might make my flash extend a bit more towards the range to fill out riders when they are at full lengths without me being on a tube right under them.
that was some good info Spiel
