RE: Afghanistan pictures...
Yeah I only do two things. Go to work for 12 hours on the flightline or go back to the b-hut to sleep. We did take a tour of the perimeter the other day. So many land mines and blown up Soviet era tanks. It's kind of sad really, you can see children playing in the land mine fields. I doubt i'll ever get off base. We still get mortered occasionally here so it's fairly dangerous. There's probably 5 explosions a day (land mine detonations).

Sounds like a nice place! I heard some guy on the news today going on about opium production. It would be one thing if the population was all doped up, but I get the feeling that 99.99999% of that is for export. I guess his point was that a country with a weak central gov't, based on a narco-economy, with tribal leaders in the wilds calling the shots, was destined to be a failed state. I'd like to think that there is some hope. The Afghans(like people in a lot of countries) deserve better. It is the 21st century and all that. How are we supposed to get to the land of John Luc Piccard with bloody tribalism?
On a bright note, he pointed out that roads connecting various cities had increased the price of certain crops(besides dope). It all sounds like the game Civilization, but central Asia is no game.
