Default 2002-04 A4 1.8T or 3.0?

I'm contemplating buying my 1st Audi and I've fallen in love with the A4 bodystyle and all the great features the car offers. I'm a bit torn on which to purchase though. I'm leaning more towards the 3.0, b/c I've heard the 1.8T has more problems. Also, I like the multi-function steering wheel that most of the 3.0's offer. Suggestions?

Are you planning on modifying the car?

If so, the 1.8T has more aftermarket parts available. The 3.0 will be limited and the only main horsepower gainer would be a supercharger kit.

No modifications, other than probably upgrading the stereo to a touchscreen navigation/bluetooth unit. Just plan on enjoying a beautiful luxury car. Regardless of which model I get I intend on getting a stick shift. While I know either model will have more expensive maintenance than the previous Japanese cars I've owned in the past, I want to make sure I'm not constantly in the shop.

If that is your plan, I'd suggest the 3.0. I'm not saying the 1.8T isn't reliable (I have a 1.8T and it's been a pleasure to own) but there are more things to break as it is forced inducted (boost leaks and what not especially with age).

Any particular car you're looking at?

Just watch out with the 3.0. I hear it's a bear to work on although if you don't do your own work I suppose it don't matter.

That's one thing I was a little concerned about. I saw where some of the repair costs for major items like timing belts were like twice as much. I'm good at driving cars, but definitely not with the repairs! lol. Since this will be paid in cash and for once I won't have a car payment I'm going into this purchase knowing upfront the upkeep is going to be a little more costly, but not having to spend thousands annually in payments will allow me to have a reserve for maintenance expenses if needed.
