Spectre722 chiming in.
Hey guys. I currently own a 2004 Hyundai Elantra(This will remain my daily driver.) I was looking into getting a 2002 Nissan Maxima but then I realized that a 2001 Audi A6 2.7T was within my price range. The car looks very nice and I love the refinement of the interior.
I heard though that when these things break, it's a nightmare. I've read on different sites and it seems that on some sites they say that this car is solid, on others they say that the 2001 A6 2.7T is not reliable. I figured you guys would be the best to ask. I know that repairs will be expensive if something breaks, but how often does something normally break on these cars?
I heard that maintenance items are expensive. Apparently if you replace the timing belt you also have to replace the water pump. Also to fix the turbos you have to take the engine out of the car. Are these statements accurate?
Thanks in advance. I am basically trying to decide between a Maxima and an A6.

Be sure to check the A6 section stickies on the care and feeding of the 2.7T You will find answers to a lot of your questions there. Maintenance and parts are bit on the high side, however a lot of the work is DIYable if you can turn a wrench. Taking it to a shop will kill your budget quick. Timing service can be done for about $350 in parts. ~$1000 if you take it to a shop. ~$1200-$1500 at a dealer. Euro specialty shop is the only way to go, but anyone that can turn a wrench can get in there and do the timing belt.
valve cover gasket leaks, cam cap leaks, cam seal leaks, crank seal leaks, oil sludge (from routine maintenance negelct) are all common issues. the biggest thing you need to be concerned about is the torque converter, if it is a tip-tronic transmission. I believe the 2001 is the cut off year for torque converter issues but I'm not positive.
yes the engine needs to come out to get at the turbos.
I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. The 2.7T can be a reliable ride with proper care and maintenance and can be a real hellacious beast of a car if you have the $$$ to drop on mods. The Maxima...is a freakin Maxima
good luck
