Newbie here
Hi everyone
I have come on here to ask for some advice. I have had a disasterous day
today. I was driving to York when the large oil can symbol flashed in my A6 Petrol avant. I called the RAC out and they said they thought it was the oil pump, they suggested a lift home on a lorry. It was a dangerous spot so I thought it would be ok to drive a mile to the services, wrong decision!!!! An almighty cloud of smoke came from the exhaust, has the turbo gone? I measured the oil levels and they are fine, I thought the smoke was from the turbo.
Any other ideas please. Also what is the value of the car as it stands if turbo has gone? It is a Gun Metal Grey A6 Avant 1.8 Petrol 110k. 3months MOT left.

First,

Second,
This is one of those things that is going to be impossible to diagnose on the internet with the limited information you have been able to provide. There are several things that "could" be the problem. The red oil can light is a warning of low oil pressure. As you have the 1.8T motor, I suspect you may have the dreaded "sludge" problem (search). Your oil pickup tube is likely clogged, leading to the low pressure condition. If you are mechanically minded, you can start diagnosing based on information you can find here in the forums. If you are not mechanically minded, you should consult a reputable shop to get you properly sorted.
good luck
PS. for future questions, you may want to post in one of the sub-sections of the forums. I recommend the A4 B5 section. Although that is not the "car" you have, most of us are from North America and most of the (active) A4 B5 guys have the 1.8T motor
