Hey guys, obviously I'm new. I actually don't own an Audi, but I'm interested in owning one. I thought I'd check out the forums to access the plethora of knowledge to actually decide.
My budget isn't a huge one, but I'm confident it's big enough to own a nice Audi. I'm looking to spend no more than $14,000. At first I only looked at A6's and focused on the 2.7t. I liked the idea of having turbos, and because I've never owned anything other than a V8 I figured I'd need to make up for the difference. Now I'm expanding my horizons a little bit and figured I'd use you guys to help. I'm not going to race the car, so I'm not looking to upgrade the motor, but at the same time I don't want a slug.
I'm wondering what differences there are between tha A6 and the A4, and wanting to know if I should rule one out. Are the differences mainly just with the motor?
Sorry if it was too drawn out or I missed some sticky that explained this all. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome!
The A6 and A4 are very different cars. Depending on the year, they only share 1 motor (2.8L v6). Since there are so many differences, I'll start with the body. Looking at your price range, I'm going to keep the years to pre-02. The A4 has an all steel body and chassis. I believe the A6 has a steel chassis with aluminum doors, fenders, trunk, and roof. The A6 is also a lot bigger.
The interior of the A6 is also different from the A4. It has the same design style and quality, but the A6 has real leather vs pleather. There are also some other upgrades that I'm unfamiliar with.
Engines. The only engine that is shared is the 2.8L v6. It has around 200 hp and is not upgradable unless you go for a $5k supercharger. The only other option for the A4 is the 1.8T. It's a great motor with a lot of aftermarket parts for it. anything from a $500 chip to make it 200 hp to full internal and turbo upgrades resulting in 400 hp. The Options for the A6 are a little better. As you mentioned, there is the 2.7T. It's a great motor to upgrade. A chip will put you around 300 hp. Unfortunately, when the turbos go, it will cost a lot to replace/upgrade them. With your price range, you'll be lloking at cars coming close to the limits on the turbos. The other option is the 4.2L v8. Rated at 300 hp and 295 ft/lbs.
You'll probably be best off with a A6 4.2L. If you do decide to go the 2.7T route, make sure that the turbo have been replaced or there is an extended warranty covering the motor/turbos.
Good luck on your search.
