It is to used as a daily driver and my g/f drives it as well so for now I want to keep it as stock as possible, but stock still kicks ***.................

It is a common problem with the B5 Audis. If you go to the dealership (at least in the US) they're only going to replace the whole cluster which can be costly. In which, some of us just have to deal with it instead of paying the fee for the cluster (some actually went to get it replaced with the same problem coming back after a while).
However, I have heard that there is a cable behind everything that is lose. I never messed around with it but some people say it only takes some cleaning and re-gluing to fix this problem.
