Question frustrated audi a6 quattro owner

Hi looking for some insight. I changed the heater core on my a6 quattro 1996. Put the car back together, heater works fine but the only thing I can not get working is the cigarette lighter.
Help
Now after a week of driving with no other issues the headlights are not working. All other lights work except that the highbeams only work by holding the lever, high beams do not work by placing the lever in the on position.
I have taken the switch apart thinking that a plastic part may have melted making it impossible to make proper contact, I did not see anything wrong with the switch. I have checked fuses ect.
What steps can I take to eliminate the switch itself.
By the way my wife needed the cigarette lighter for the GPS and other devices so I ran a line from the battery directly to the lighter ( I put a 15 amp fuse). Would that have anything to do with the headlight problem?
Headlights worked for days with the lighter bypass until all of a sudden the headlights stopped working.
Thanks for any help.
