Default Finally looking for an A4

My name is Jason, for the past 6 years I have been looking at Audis every time I buy a new car but always end up getting something else. Two years ago I decided I was not ready for a 4 door and got a 95 AWD Talon that I ended up swapping the motor, converting to a 5spd, building and tuning Megasquirt, and tuning to run on E85 @ 20psi. But... I now have two children and although the power and reliability is nice to have, the comfort is no longer there.

I have commited to purchasing a 01 1.8 A4 with "an oil sludge problem". The previous owner says the engine needs replaced but I would like to know if parts are interchangeable through the years. I have learned from some of my searches that some years have different componets but I still have not found anything that says an older engine will work in a newer car. If the engine does have too much damage to rebuild, I would love to be able to use a different motor(cheaper) and just make some modifications for it to work.

I'm pretty sure that as long as it's the sae engine code, it should work, but DO NOT, trust me, I don't know enough about it. I would post this question in the A4 section (particularly the B5 section) and get an answer from someone who has the knowledge base that I lack.

also, welcome

So after 2 months I finally got the A4 I was looking for, the 01 fell through and instead I got a 00 1.8T..quattro..manual..sport/cold weather package w/ 70k for an insanely low price off of ebay.
The car itself is a dream to drive compared to almost every other car I have ever driven. I can't belive it took me this long to get one! I am still fixing all the little things I am finding but nothing that has made me regret getting it. My next step will be to get vag and figure out why the airbag light is on.

Its common for the connectors under the seats to pull apart.Take them apart snap them back together zip tie them closed & clear the code for the air bag.
