Default Another n00b in the ranks checking in

Warm greetings to all forum members. Looks like a nice place to hang out and get some much needed info. After much time spent at www.crownvic.net and www.s-seriesforum.com, I find myself in nOOb-status again.
I just purchased a 1997 A4 1.8T Quattro. I REALLY would have liked to get a 5-speed, but unfortunately didn't have that choice, so I ended up with an automatic.
After scanning the forum for a few minutes, I'm seeing that there is a handfull of seemingly common modifications that could help squeeze a bit more performance out of the engine. Cat-back exhaust, chip, and an open atmosphere BOV. Am I on the right track here?

Also: Anyone have a recommendation for an OBD II scan tool that will interface with a Pocket PC?

Thanks for any input/feedback!

Between the Shadetreesoftware.com and the Ross-Tech, is one device / program particularly better than the other in their capabilities?

Yeah, I really like my '97. Much more refined than my old Nissan Pathbeater in the background. [:'(]
