Default 2003 2.7T -difficult initial cold start then fine*

Hello,
A problem has just started with my 2003 2.7T. Initial "cold" starts require 6 to 10 turns of the ignition key to get the car to idle without stalling. After the lucky "start", the car idles very rough for about 2 minutes - pressing the gas during this time actually has the effect of dropping RPM's toward stall and then it revs go up.

*To make it even more peculiar, once the car is running it will restart perfectly with a single turn of the key unless left to sit for a long period (e.g. 5+ hours).

Has anyone had this issue and if so, how did you resolve?
Anyone have any thoughts on what this could be?
Thanks!
