Default 2000 S4 cam seals

I will be replacing the timing belt this weekend and while I'm in there I need to replace the cam seals. My question is how to keep the cams from moving when replacing the seals since one removes the cam holding tool to do this.
Thanks

there are two tools in the "cam locking kit". There is the bar that holds the cam sprockets at the "wings" and then there is the crank lock pin. Before you remove the sprockets, you put the pin in the block to hold the crank in place while you remove the sprockets and pull the seals.

See this PAGE at ECS for a picture of what the pin looks like.

Good luck, let us know how it goes

Default Cant locate the crankshaft locking pin spot

I can't seem to find the 10mm plug. Do I need the locking pin if I am sure the crank doesnt move and the cam holding tool is in the correct position?

some good information in this thread that you might find useful. I'm not clear on what you are having problems with. There are a couple of other timing belt threads on here that can describe the various "options" as to what procedures and tools are essential and which ones you can do without. Of course, skipping steps, taking shortcuts, etc. can be risky if you aren't careful.

keep up with the updates. good luck

It's done and it runs! I didn't use the crank pin...couldn't find the place for it so I just marked the crank to the block and that worked fine. The entire job really was quite simple and only took about six hours. Thanks for all the helpful information.
