Smile Fabric Replacement

How hard is it to replace the fabric on the armrest or door panels? If you've done it can you post pics.

Default Vinyl

I found a guy that will recover my headliner. Turns out he can replace my door panel fabric in black vinyl as well pretty cheaply so I'm going to have him do it. Normally does work on at a Cadillac dealer on sunroofs & headliners during the week so I know he can do it properly.

Default fabric spray adhesive

I bet they usually spray a tack coat of adhesive to the surface your bonding to (door card), wait for it to get tacky, then apply the fabric.

I've been doing this on some cars lately. I took the armrests from one friend's 96 A4 and another friend's 2000 Passat and recovered them in black suede. I also took out my rear decklid (where the rear speakers are, under the back glass) and reskinned that as well. It's 10:30PM right now, so I can't get pics of my decklid, but I will get some to post up, as well as pics of the armrests.

It's not terribly difficult work - you just have to be patient and feel it out. Best bet is to start with the largest planar surface first, and then work the material around the folds and angles. I use 3M spray adhesive which works great and doesn't bleed through, even on thin suede.

Once I pick up some more suede, I'll be redoing my door panels, armrest, A-pillars, and headliner as well.

I'll try and get pics this week to add to the thread.

I got my suede at Joann Fabrics for about $14 per linear yard (on a 54" wide roll).
