RE: Wheel alignment how to
Wheel alignmentMoving vehicle to initial position for wheel alignmentRunning gear 1BA, 1BB, 1BC, 1BT, 1BP
Note:
On account of different wheel alignment platforms, it may be necessary to raise front axle of vehicle for insertion of spacer gauge -V.A.G 1925-. Bounce vehicle after lowering it.
ββ Insert spacer gauge -V.A.G 1925- with adapters - V.A.G 1925/3 or V.A.G 1925/4- and screw out the two threaded stems
β. . . until they just make contact with the front bolts -arrow- of the subframe. [/ul]
This must not cause the vehicle to be raised. [/ul]
Vehicle is now in initial position.
Vehicle with sports running gear 1BD, 1BE, 1BQ, 1BV, RS4
ββ Position axle lift at front jacking points and raise vehicle.
βPosition adapter - V.A.G 1925/6- on adapter - V.A.G 1925/3 or V.A.G 1925/4- of spacer gauge.
βLower vehicle onto adapters -arrow-. [/ul]
Vehicle is now in initial position.
All running gear versions
In this position, program in wheel alignment computer checks whether toe-in value for each wheel is as specified. If necessary, toe-in is to be corrected by altering length of track rod.
Adjusting front axle toe in initial position => Page 44-46
Wheel alignment specifications => Page 44-18
If correction is necessary, this is indicated by wheel alignment program.

Wheel alignmentRaising vehicle with running gear 1BA, 1BB, 1BC, 1BD, 1BE, 1BP, 1BQ, 1BT, 1BV, RS4When performing the next operation, it must be ensured that the wheels remain in contact with the turntables whilst raising the vehicle.
Should contact be lost, the turntables are not to be moved, as this would bias the measurement result.
βPosition axle lift at front jacking points and raise vehicle. [/ul]
Note:
Vehicle is raised by 60 mm.
ββ Extend cylinders in threaded stems and fix in position with locking pins. [/ul]
Make sure locking pins -arrows- are correctly positioned. [/ul]
βLower vehicle onto spacer gauge V.A.G 1925. [/ul]

Wheel alignmentAdjusting toe constant "S"
ββ Unfasten hexagon nut -A-.
βScrew out bolt -B- approx. 4 mm.
βPress down track rod joint as far as it will go. [/ul]
ββ Screw in bolt -B- until exact specification is attained.
βTighten hexagon nut -A-and check value. [/ul]
Tighten torques:wheel bearing housing:
wheel bearing housing steel 42 Nm
wheel bearing housing aluminium 50 Nm
βTighten bolt -B- to 7 Nm.
βLower vehicle back into initial position.
βScrew down threaded stem.
βBounce vehicles with standard running gear several times. [/ul]
Checking toe constant following adjustment
The wheel alignment equipment now re-checks the toe constant.
Setting is OK if measured values in re-check are within tolerance for check value.
If measured values are not within tolerance for check value, re-adjustment must be performed in raised position.

Wheel alignmentAdjusting front axle toe
βUnfasten lock nut -B-.
ββ Adjust toe in each case at left and right wheel with hexagon -A-. [/ul]
Make sure bellows are not twisted after turning track rods
as twisted bellows soon become worn. [/ul]
βTighten lock nut -B- to 40 Nm and check toe-in value again. [/ul]
Value set may deviate slightly after tightening lock nut -B-.
Setting is however correct if measured toe value is within tolerance.

Take your car to a good front-end shop
and pay $70.

If you have the equipment to do the job, I'm sure Dave's
specs are good.
