scary new noise under 1900rpm TT
Hi everyone. ok im terrified, i dont have much money so im afraid to bring my car into the shop. i left town fro about 5 days and when i returned, upon imedietley starting my car theres a brand new bad sound. until now the only problem i had with my car (which is a 2002 audi tt roadster, i believe the 225hp) was a gas gauge that reported half empty when the tank was empty and an esp that is always off.
any way this sound is best described as quiet, very quick and tamborine like. i have not noticed a real increase in its speed with rpm, dosnt mean it dosnet increase though. the wierd thing sbout it is that at 1700 rpm it totlally stops. everytime the sound is gone right at that point. the sound is coming from under the hood on the passangers side. it appears to be coming from around the same area as the timing belt.
im an idiot i admit it. a while ago i accidentley took off the timing belt instead of the serpentine belt... i put it back on carefully and didnt have a single problem. that was about 4 months ago. a friend mentioned that it may be the fuel filter, not sure why he thinks this. another friend thinks that the timing belt is the cause even thogh tehre has been no problem with it.
ahhhh! help me if you can, i will be forever greatful. if you all need any more details i will do my best to do so.

RE: scary new noise under 1900rpm TT
wow! ok thanks for the advice. guess what? i was driving down the street today, nice and slow and my engine completley died. no sound nothing, just died. i coasted into a parking lot and the car hasnt started since. the starter spins but the engine dosnt start. theres no chocking sound, no thump, nothing just the electromechanical sound of the starter. the timing belt is still on the engine and as far as i can tell (havnt gotten a chance to take the engine apart yet, just happened) the serpentine belt is still on.
what went wrong!? i tried jump starting it just in case... im looking into where the fuel filter is, maybe no gas is getting to the engine. im also looking into checking the spark plugs maybe thats the problem. i tried using throttle while turning the engine as well to no avail.
what should i do? i dont want to call a tow truck just yet and i dont have the money for a mechanic at the moment.
thank you so much for the help, i miss driving humphrey- my beautiful tt

When you crank the engine does it sound funny? Kind of like it has no compression?
If it does i want you to remove the top half of the timing belt cover again and have someone crank the engine, if the T belt doesn't move it snapped and you possibly have cylinder head valve damage.

i hear no compression none at all... im pretty sure the timing belt does not move when the engine is cranked. ill admit im pretty nieve when it comes to working on cars... any idea how much a repair like that may set me back? do you think that maybe the fuel pump may not be working? i have yet to find a great way to check for this
thanks for the help.
thanks for the help.

If it were just the fuel pump it would sound exactly the same as it normally would but it wouldn't start.
More than likely the T belt went, the cost for repair can be HUGE. Find a good european repair shop to remove the cylinder head and check for valve damage, usually runs about 8 hours to R&R the head + the $$$ to get the head overhauled with new valves.
It can run you easilly 1200-2000 dollars depending on what shop you go to.
Sorry about the bad luck.[:@]
