Must be misfire night. Cyl 1&4 on mine
Ok I did the TB and now i have a rough idle and misfires on cyl 1&4 I dont have a CEL though. Car was running fine prior to TB.
I might have had the timing off on my first attempt to crank , but only by like a tooth or so. I am very sure my timing is right.
Would being off by a tooth bend the valves?
Why no CEL?
I have done quite a bit of reading and my spark plugs are less than 20k old.
I would like to check my ICM, any way to test it?
Its a 2000 TT 180.
Thanks.

One tooth off wont bend valves. Considering the misfires didnt exist before the belt, most likly it is something with the timing. If the car is actually misfiring you should have a flashing check engine light with the engine running. Is it running rough? How do you know its one and four? There is no seperate ignition control module on your vehicle. It is part of the ecm.

The engine is running very rough. The car idles at about 700-1000 rpms. I scanned the car with vag-com for the DTC's.
My battery died when I did the work so I couldnt turn it over for a day.
The codes are P301, P304. I just dont understand why my CEL wont flash or come on.
The first time I turned the car on the light came on and started flashing, but I cleared the codes later.
No smoke from the exhaust, but I did pull the coilpacks and checked my spark plugs there was oil on #2 and a few of them seemed wet.
Thanks again.

Try pulling out a coil and plug for cylinder 1 and 4 and laying it on the valvecover to see if it will spark. If it sparks run a compression test on all cylinders. Otherwise well need to figure out why those cylinders arent firiing.

I got a compression tester from autozone yesterday, just in case. I'll try the spark test first thing in the morning.
I have vag-com is there a way to see if my timing is ahead or behind in firing?
SoI know if i have to do the job again and go back a tooth.

OK I have been doing a lot of thinking and reading about my situation. My battery went out on me as well it wouldn't turn the car over.
Heres what I'm thinking the timing might be right but i have to run the car for a few minutes to let the maps and ECU relearn everything.
Could this be right?
this would explain why vag-com doesnt see any timing faults.

UPDATE: I tried the spark test this morning and sparks are coming out of coilpack 1. I didnt haave time for the compression test but that will happen tonight.

Well you have at least 1/3 of the equation. Air, fuel, spark(properly timed?). Since you said the plugs were wet im assuming you have fuel. So you either have a spark occuring at the wrong tim(not likely since the other two cylinders are ok), or an air issue which would incluede low compression.
