That is ridiculous. The chain is lubed with engine oil and if it isn't tight it will make noise. There is no special spray or lube in this world that will make that noise go away without fixing it. He most likely didn't even take the cover off.

 

This might sound weird but it seems like I might have the same problem with my 03 A6 4.2. The ticking noise is only when the car is hot after a long drive. I only have 56K on my car and I took the car to more than 5 different shops and everyone of them gave me a different diagnosis. But two dealers told me it was normal on these cars (go figure....). Anyways one shop did tell me that it could be the cam tentioners. Well let me know it the noise goes away when you get it done. BTW does anyone know any good independent shops in LA area that know these cars and they are honest people?
