Key won't program

Key won't program
I know there are 400-500 posts on key programming already, but I tried all the different ways I could find and the thing still won't work. I've been freezing my butt off for the last hour and nothing has worked.
I have a 2000 A4 1.8t qm
Using the directions off one of the previous threads, here's what happens-
1. Take your first key and insert it into the ignition. Turn it one click forward. Ok
2. Roll down your window just in case. Step outside the car, and lock the car with the second key. So far, so good
2b (optional, it might take a few times). Take key out of lock (it wouldn't program with the key in the lock for some reason) Ok
3. With your key remote press the unlock button. The lights (my brake lights) should flash. Lights flash, door stays locked
4. Now lock the car with the remote, and then unlock it. (it should unlock your doors). Lights flash, door stays locked
5. Remove the key from the lock and the key from the ignition, and try it's function. Nada
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Key won't program
Ihad the dealer replace the batteries in both of the remotes while I was getting the key cut. They actually didn't charge me for cutting the key, just the batteries.
I got some different instructions from another forum. If it works, I'll post the instructions.

RE: Key won't program
Finally got it to work.
I think the 5 sec thing was what did it. Or there were too many keys already programmed.
Remote transmitter coding procedure
- Switch ignition on (using separate key).
- Lock vehicle from outside using key to be coded via driver-side door lock.
- Press "unlock" button within 5 seconds often enough to reach next
memory position (in example given, twice).
- Every press of the button is confirmed by the emergency flashers and
the anti-theft system horn.
- Wait 5 seconds.
- Now press "unlock" button one more time (vehicle unlocks).
- Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
- Check function of new transmitter.
Notes:
Be sure that new transmitters are always coded into free memory
positions. If occupied positions (distinguishable by a "1") are used,
the transmitter previously coded to this position will no longer work.
Existing remote transmitter recoding procedure
- Press any button on transmitter.
If vehicle does not respond by locking or unlocking:
- Lock and unlock vehicle within 30 seconds using driver-side lock.
- Now check function of recoded remote transmitter.
Clearing memory positions
Notes:
It is possible to clear all memory positions, e.g. if a customer loses
a remote transmitter. Proceed as follows:
- Switch ignition on using key.
- Then mechanically lock central locking from outside vehicle using key.
- Activate remote transmitter "unlock" button on key five times at one
second intervals. A short horn signal will sound each time.
- Then, after 6 seconds, press remote transmitter "unlock" button to
confirm this clearing procedure one more time.
- Central locking should no longer unlock itself via remote transmitter.
- Switch ignition off.
Up to four transmitters can now be coded again.

RE: Key won't program
I have a question about programming a second remote - for some reason (mind you, I'm not too savy about this kind of stuff) I can only program one remote at a time. If I program one, then the other stops working, and vice versa. What's going on??? Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to Audi Forums jdenter!
Since you're new... check out the START HERE! (click this link) link to get a rundown of the lingo/vocab here at audiforums.
Then be sure to search the archives when you have a question. Chances are the question has been asked before (probably several times) and the archives will have plenty of information to answer your question. If you still need answers, please feel free to ask questions.
Don't feel intimidated; we are all a bunch of pretty cool guys (and gals). Feel free to post advice, comments, ideas, suggestions, and even pics.

Not exactly sure how that can be happening. It sounds like while you program one remote you are unprogramming the other - that doesn't make sense.
What procedure are you using? Which key are you putting in the ignition - the good or bad remote?

RE: Key won't program
I have a similar problem and I followed the instructions but still failed, I have a A6 C5, 1997
Remote transmitter coding procedure
- Switch ignition on (using separate key).OK
- Lock vehicle from outside using key to be coded via driver-side door lock. OK
- Press "unlock" button within 5 seconds OK
- Every press of the button is confirmed by the emergency flashers and
the anti-theft system horn. I ONLY GET FLASHERS, I MAY NOT HAVE AN ANTI THEFT HORN
- Wait 5 seconds.
- Now press "unlock" button one more time (vehicle unlocks). YES VEHICLE UNLOCKS
- Switch ignition off and remove ignition key. OK, i ASSUME I TAKE OUT KEY FROM THE DRIVERS DOOR
- Check function of new transmitter. DOESNT RESPOND AGAIN!
I also tried the Existing remote transmitter recoding procedure, but it failed. The reason for all this was that I replaced the batteries in the remote transmitter ( two 2025, 3v batteries) and I gathered that it needed to be reprogrammed for it to continue to work.
Thankyou in anticipation.

RE: Key won't program
I have exactly the same problem as you jebaeck! I have a 1997 A4 1.8SE.
I follow the procedure, the doors unlock at the end of the sequence, after that the remotes dont work again. I also noticed that even if I lock the doors with the key, the alarm system is no longer arming (flashing LED's in doors not working). If i press the button inside the car to activate/deactivate the internal alarm senors, the LED's do flash once so there is power to them for sure.
I even changed the control unit in the trunk, still the same problem[:@]. I checked with a VAG after trying to program the remotes and they are registering, so why won't it work?
All this because of changing the batteries. If anybody has any idea how the hell to solve this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
