My 2000 A6 2.7t does not have an immobilizer. I think they just added that "feature" in 2001.
My 2005 A4 3.0 does have the immobilizer, and interestingly enough I just used the method you described to reset both key fobs on it after I replaced the car battery. That worked alright.

I've got the new key, but the local locksmith who promised to cut it for me folded because the new key is made with steel and his machine can cut soft metals only.
I am too busy to go and look for another locksmith, but in the mean time the ebay seller emailed me programming procedure
AUDI: Programming the Key Fob

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

Procedure

1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.

3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn will sound once.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.

NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.
For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with
a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.

5. Switch Ignition OFF.

6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.

7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.

8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.

Final conclusion. I found another locksmith that would cut the key for me, but he wanted $35 (and we complain about dealers) and was located pretty far away. Having dealer closer I bought new flat key from them while it took about 3 minutes to cut it and total cost was $56 plus tax. The key was ready to use without programming and has a build in light.
Anybody wants to buy a blank transponder key?

It pays to shop around, but how much you value your time.
Still having blank key from ebay I found local locksmith who cut it for me for $15. So now I have 2 new flat keys.
The one from dealer for $56 and the ebay who with cutting cost me $31,.
Would I know the dealer's key is 56 I would not spend all the time to go with ebay option, but hopefully my experience will pay for somebody else.
None of the keys required programming.
So is my 2001 model equipped with immobilizer, or is it a myth?

If you are driving the car with those keys than it doesn't have the immobilizer. My 02 A6 and 00 A8 both have it.
