Intermittent Cruise Contro - 98'A4
Hello:
Got an intermittent problem with the cruise control. It will kick out of cruise control after being engaged for a few minutes. The only way to get it back is to turn the motor off and then on. Sometimes even that does not work.
Am I looking at a major expense to get the cruise control to work reliably again?

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I have a 98 A4 as well and have similar problems with the cruise. It hasn't shut off on me yet, but it doesn't always turn on. I have to hit the button several times to set it. Kind of annoying to other drivers when I go from 75 to 65 and back again trying to set the cruise.
Does yours gradually slow down or just shut off completly?

From what i've read on teh 'Zine, last year, sometime, I think, you've gotta replace the CC-stalk, which is kinda trickey 'cuz if you F-up and short out the wrong wire you'll trip the airbag circuit...
You can sometimes find a CC stalk up on eBay, if you're persistant

Replaced the stalk for $80 dollars and it still works on and off. I also have it just shut off. The dealer says maybe the "new" stalk is broken. I know three other people with this problem and no-one has found a solution. Switching the system on and off quickly will sometimes get it working again. Good Luck!

I have replaced 3 headlight / cruise stalks. The headlight contact plastic piece melts from heat. I repair em now. BUT ... I found that only one works the cruise right. The others are VERY tempermental. These stalks are ... bad.

I had the same thing happen to my b5, the cruise would be very tempermental and when it did work the light never came on to show you it was active. Now it does not work period.
From what I can find through research, its probably the stalk but could also possibly be the cruise control computer.

Yeah, it saves money on replacing stalks and makes you a more alert driver. Keeping that beloved audi out of danger !
My B5 is probably one of the hardest cars I have driven to keep a steady highway speed. Highway speed puts you just over 3000 rpm and the car is very sensitive and responsive at that engine speed.
