Default gear shifter problem???!!!

I am a newbie and i have a question about my 2000 S4 6-speed. I was doing some moderately hard driving on the expressway and i was coming off the exit ramp and i was down shifting into third gear. However, when i did so i some how grinded the gear for a brief second. Then i noticed that after that i was no longer able to get the shifter into 3rd gear. the problem has persisted for a while now and i still will not shift into 3rd. Everyother gear works great except reverse( which is sometimes tough to get into gear). The clutch is still very strong and i believe is in good condition. Does anyone have any idea what this problem could be and if so, how much do you think it'll be to repair. thank you in advance.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like you blew a synchro.

had the same thing happen to my car when i went to shift to second i slightly grinded the gear. i was wearin flip flops at the time...stupid idea. i couldnt get into first and second gears for about a week. i had to dive it home in 3rd gear. i dont kno what i did but just wiggled it around and stuff. sounds cheesy but all my gears work fine now
