Fuel Pump..or fuel pump relay????????
1991 200 Turbo...front wheel drive....ok since we had the car the fuel pump has been loud, whining, humming sound...the car has trouble starting in the morning. Almost like it doesn't get gas quick enough. So now Friday driving home the humming got louder...and on the highway the car just died...wouldn't start...got it towed...tried to start it again..it starts...runs for like 3 min and then just dies. So we get it to our mechanic and he says it's a relay..he puts one in and the car runs..stays running..but the fuel pump noise is still there..Now my question is...can a bad fuel pump burn out the relay? I feel I should replace both the fuel pump and relay just in case..Thoughts please...also should I change the fuel filter too...is that easy enough to do?

RE: Fuel Pump..or fuel pump relay????????
I suppose a bad fuel pump could burn out a relay. But you also have to think why that fuel pump is making that noise, more often or not its a restriction in the fuel feed line thats straining the pump. The fuel filter is most likely plugged causing the pump to strain. I would replace that first before putting in a new pump, if the noise is still there afterward then put a pump in.
