Default Engine Speed Sensor

I'm still hoping for some input on this:

Hi everyone. Looking for some advice regarding the performance of my 2004 A8L. A few things to complain about.
1. The car has issues shifting from 2nd to 3rd. When traveling up an incline, it almost always shifts really hard. I can do it manually with no problem, but when left in Drive (versus tiptronic) it shifts very hard.
2. When trying to accelerate a little aggressively, i've noticed the RPM seems to go up and down too often(seems to fluctuate in a range of a few hundred RPMs). It feels like I am in a boat, and you can hear the engine change pitch(as if the propeller where coming out of the water).

Would a bad engine speed sensor cause this type of issue?

Thanks for any input.

If your car has around 100K mi. , you might change the transmission
fluid and filter. Have a knowledgable Audi/ VW mechanic do it.

The car is 86k miles. Has not had the timing belt replacement yet, although numerous other repairs were recomended(new compressor for the suspension, timing belt, tire pressure sensors)...all totaling around $5K according to dealer estimates. haha. no thanks.

Anyhow, the car seems real sluggish too. It used to be quick, and responsive, now it hesitates to get up and go. Any other input is appreciated.
