Battery drains
Hi
I would like some direction on where I need to look for the power leakage.
I have a Audi A4 1.8T 2000 B5 series.
It started draining the battery. I would need to use jumpers or run start the car. It goes fine for the entire day but in the morning it wont start easily. You can hear the battery is busy draining.
Yesterday when I started the car beeping sound and exclamation mark appears. After this I drove for about 10min. I stopped the car and after 4 hours the battery was completely drained!! The engine lights does come on but you can year that the battery is dead.
Just before this problems with the battery started I replace the temp control switch on the radiator. After this the battery problems started!
Please help!!!
Kind regards
J.L

You're descriptions of things kind of made it confusing, sorry.
Anyway, it sounds like the battery is not charging. You'll need to verify that the car is charging the battery when it's running. Get it running and check the voltage on the battery with a volt meter. It should read at least 12.5 to 13.5 volts under normal charging. If it's not charging (showing less than 12 volts running) you probably have a voltage regulator going down. The bushes on them wear down over time (your car is now 15 years old so). The voltage regulator is a removable module located on the backside of the alternator. It's a simple replacement procedure once you get access to the back of the alternator. Getting to the back of he alternator can be the hardest part of the job on some models. The Bosch alternators are pretty much bullet proof. The weakest link is the brushes inside the Voltage Regulator Module that wear down over time (this is normal) and must be replaced every 10-12 years.
If the car is charging properly, how old is the battery? More than 5 years old? Replace it.
If you don't have any way to check the voltage to make sure the car is charging, drive it to an AutoZone or Advanced Auto location and have them check it with their equipment. It's free.
