The motor idles real rough, backfires, low power, smokes, and dies. When it dies it does not restart for a while, but randomly it will start.

Did a compression test with a cold engine and these are the results:

Bank 1(passenger side)

4) 120 psi

3) 115 psi

2) 120 psi

1) 110 psi

Bank 2(driver side)

8) 0 psi
7) 0 psi
6) 30 psi
5) 0 psi

Did a leak down test on bank 2 with a cold engine and these are the results:

between 20-40%

However when rotating the crankshaft clockwise by hand i noticed that at times the left camshaft on the drivers side bank would not spin sometimes and I had a lot of trouble seating the valves. I would hear an occasional pop and the camshaft would spin a half a turn abruptly. I observed the the passenger side camshafts did not behave in the same way, they always turned with the crankshaft.

Is this a camshaft adjuster problem or is this normal? Am I jumping the gun here or is there anything else to look for?

Thanks
Daryll

Sounds like a failed cam chain tensioner to me. That'll throw the cam phasing out, kill your compression, and create the misfires. If your car's build date is earlier than 10/04, they were known for this. The fix is brutal - $500 for the CCT, additional cost for anything else, and at least a partial engine pull to replace the parts.
