Default Audi fires half of cylinders please help

I have a 98 audi a4 1.8 turbo which is at the moment barely running. It only starts if my foot is on the gas and stalls out if i take it off. Even with the pedal to the floor it sits at around 1000 rpms. It chugs along at about 2mph but every once in a while it catches and speeds off. Right when this first started happening i was driving about 20mph when i heard a loud snap and it hasn't driven right since. I have a diagnostic cable to read all the codes the cars throws back but i have no check engine light so it wont tell me the source of the problem. The throttle works fine as the computer picks up changes in the throttle angle as i put more or less pressure on the gas pedal. My neighbor thinks that 2 of the cylinders arent firing as it smells like raw gasoline when i run the car and the engine shakes like crazy. I took out all the coils to check for any issues but they all look perfectly fine. I'm assuming that if in fact two cylinders weren't firing id get a misfire code of some sort but as i said there is no check engine light and the diagnostic program isn't picking up anything out of the usual. Ill be taking the front end apart this weekend to have a look at the timing belt but if that isn't the problem then i'm stumped on what it is. I'm not willing to take it to the garage because i have all the equipment i need to do the labor myself and I've already put to much money into this car. Any suggestions?
