Im not sure if the models later than the A4B6 do the same thing.
But the A4B5 climate control flaps have a foam covering which perishes and then lets air blow thru 5he holes in the heater flaps.
My A4 B6 has similar problems but i have not checked the flaps yet.
Check if theres sheet foam bits comming out if or stuck behind the vents.
Or use a endoscope ( camera on a long cord ) to look down the vents into the air box and see what the flaps look like.

The flaps need to be taken out & new foam glued over them if thats the problem.
I did my A4B5 and posted up a bit of a writeup, it took a day to take apart, another to fix & another to put it all back together..
But first, check to see if it is loose foam comming out the vents, or stuck behind the vents, or use a endoscope to view right down into the heater box via the vents.( $10 on ebay ) USB endoscope.
I have a feeling that i will need to do my A4 B6 as well. But im double checking after i fix the thermostat problem first.
The big thing is to make a thick cardboard sheet up & screw the bolts and screws into it and label them as you remove them. And dont firce anything, if it wont come out easy, theres a bolt/screw/clip holding it in still.

Climate Control blowing warm outside air
I think MarteA4's observation about the pieces of foam blowing through the vents is indicating the problem that I have been struggling with for a long time. It has to be something to do with the blending of the air somewhere under the dash. I shall check that out. Thanks.
