front or rear, they are different and also make sure you get ones for auto and not manual since the lengths are different.

or just replace the boot

it may be cheaper at your local napa, but i believe they have something like a $107 core charge.

I bought new axles for my A4 from www.germanautoparts.com outside of Albany, NY. Awesome place, great service, and the axles were very reasonably priced. Couldn't be happier and I've ordered from them since, and will continue to do so.

When I did axles on my A4, I used a tech procedure on AudiWorld.com (I think) or AudiDIY.com because it mentioned that you don't have to mess with the pinch bolt (the bolt that anchors the upper control arms to the spindle). It said you could undo the trailing lower control arm and have enough play to pivot the hub and get the axle out that way. They were right.
Also, the axles are bolted to the differential with 12-point socket-head bolts. You MUST use 12-point bits to remove them. Try it with Torx bits (6 point) and you'll strip them out. I bought a set of four different 12-point bits from ECSTuning.com or GermanAutoParts.com for about $15. Don't try and get around that - you'll be sorry. Other than that, it's a pretty straightforward change, nothing fancy or arcane that you have to know.
