96 A4 2.8 quattro trans wont shift

tinkered with it this afternoon and it seemed to start every time today i hooked up the scan tool and got codes p1340 and p 1392 cam sensor codes and cleared them and they have not come back on yet i do want to change the cam sensor because it looks like one that may have come from a junkyard/ but this code 1340 -cam/crank sensor out of sequence does this mean the car is out of time? or can this be the sensor going bad? but the car does not seem out of time it doesnt seem to lack power and it doesnt have a hard time turning over when hot like alot of older cars will do if the timing is advanced too much. and i had the inspection covers off to check the timing belt and it looks good no dry cracks or signs of fraying but i have no idea when or if it has ever been changed, i am really hoping this is not stretched and causing it to throw these codes but the way my luck goes it probably is stretched.

If the cam sensor isn't working properly, the ECU cannot tell what's what and it won't fire. Don't know about the timing belt stretching but you really don't what that to happen They don't like it all. I'd check and make sure it is still in time. If it's a tooth off on the cam, it shouldn't cause any major issues (valve damage) but it won't run worth a crap. Find the timing marks on the crank and both cam gears and make sure they are all lined up at TDC. If you're not sure when the last timing belt change was performed, I'd plan on doing one very soon.

ok i will check the cam timing tonight its probably a safe bet to assume the timing belt hasnt been changed because of the low miles (81,000) so it looks like i will be doing one of these very soon,ill let you know how i make out.

got back into the a4 tonight and i did find that the cam timing is ok but the timing belt is unusually tight i can only turn it about 45 degrees but the haynes manual i have says the spec is 90 degrees i do plan on doing a complete timing belt job for the peace of mind because i am thinking that the timing belt tension was increased to compensate for it being stretched and as far as i can tell it is the original belt so there really is no shame for it,now i am debating wether this is a job i should take on myself or have a garage do,i would love to give it a try but winter is coming and i need to get the 68 skylark put away and get the a4 back on the road so as of yet im not sure what i will do.
