Default '87 4000 irratic idle, will not accelerate

The car is an '87 4000 5 speed with a billion miles on it and has run well - with the usual problems that I have remedied with the help of my friends on this forum.

Today on the way to work - a 55 mile drive mostly at 55-65 MPH, the drive was uneventful until I exited the interstate and came to a stop. Car sat and idled fine but when I went to proceed into the intersection, the car "conked out on me" would not accelerate and then stalled. I was able to nurse it over to the side, sat a minute and then restarted it and was able to get to work about 2 miles away and at about 35 mph. It stalled again in the parking lot - it will "start" but does not idle properly and when I floor it, there is no additional rpm response.

I recently replaced the fuel pump and accumulator and filter - all Bosch. I checked for vaccum hoses being disconnected and could not detect anything - HELP!!!

Any suggestions let me know - this is a new one on me.

Thanks in advance

check item 2 ( rubber hose ) for cracks/leaks ans ensure the clamps are tight, any air getting into this area due to leaks with give the effect your getting

I think your on the right track - I replaced the rubber intake boot that you pictured due to a large crack - I was able to make a temporary fix with electrical tape until the new boot arrived. I am aware of how vaccuum dependent these cars are - its a challenge.

It has to be something stupid/simple - I'll let you know - any other suggestions??

Well shortly after I posted my problem it got worse - the car would not start at all!

I did check the vaccumn as suggested and all appeared to be fine - then I saw a broken wire that should have been attached to one of the cold start valves mounting bolts. I held the end of the wire to the connector and as the car was cranked it started and ran well until I removed the wire/

There you go, took me longer to find my wire crimps/cutter and lugs then it did to fix it - that nomex insulation audi used breaks down over time and heat - it is the second wire that broke off at the lug.

Thanks again
