cranks but won't start

Just a project car for my son's first ride. Picked it up for 800 bucks expecting to put some work into it. Previous owner stated it diedon the freeway. Quick check, showed the timing belt was intact. Got it home, started picking through any fuse and relay we can find. So far, all checks out. Got a finger in on the belt and it feels like it may just be a tad loose. Before I go further into that, is there any suggestions of common issues? I'll try to answer any questions related to the car as well.
