Default faded headlights - what can be done?

Just bought a '98 A6 and the headlights are faded and def not clear any more. Is there any way to take the assembly apart and clean them or am I just going to have to find a new set of headlights and replace the ones I have?

Thanks.

go to advance auto parts, NOT autozone (they dont carry it). there is a product in a silver bag. I could not find the exact product on their website but its the only one in the silver bag. It includes everything you need.
Its really easy, spend a lot of time with the sanding and be very sure you wash off ALL ALL ALL of the lens VERY well or you will get little specs of plastic on your finished product.
I have used it multiple times and I have recommended it to friends, they all loved it.
Oh yeah I remember it has a Ford Windstar mini-van on the front of the packaging. It only shows the headlight though, but I recognize it.
Its $20. Takes 40 min.

when you have your car detailed, you can ask them to buff it out too!

I've very glad I found this thread! I too bought a 98 A6 and the headlights are nasty. I'll try this before I buy another set.

ETA: I found this stuff today and all I can say is "wow"! It took me about 75 minutes to do the job, but my headlights were really bad. They look great now.

Did anyone get the name of the product? There isn't an Advance Auto on the west coast so I'm going to call around first.

That product is sold at Wal-Mart also. Heres another way to clean that gunk off the lights. Try some good ole cheap, or expensive toothpaste. I have done this many times to many cars. It will remove the yellowish gunk very well, sometimes it will need to be repeated to get a better fininsh. The only thing that kit has that toothpaste doesnt, is a finsh gloss, its like Armor All, but for the headlights. I have been using cheap $.99 toothpaste. Try it out!!!

Thanks! We definitely have a Walmart in my area. I may go the quick and cheap and head outside with a tube of toothpaste.

Advantage for toothpaste: Minty smell when you're done!
