Default Gear box ECU problems

Hi,

I wanted to ask for some advise regarding a problem that I am having with my Audi A4. It's a 2003 1.8T model and has had a lot of money spent on it to date so has had a lot of good replacements.

Unfortunately the ECU has recently gone on it, the reverse gear stopped working and the gears flashed on the dashboard. I took it to an automatic gear box specialist who quoted me £500 to get it repaired and then put it back in, changing the gear box oil if required? It couldn't be repaired and after about 5 weeks of him trying to get it repaired and track down another one he has said that I need to get a new one.

My choices are:
- To pay him £500 to collect it as is in a broken state.
- Pay for a new one costing £1700 all in, that includes labor.

Do you have any suggestions as I really don't know what to do. I think the car is probably worth about £3000 if I was to sell it working, maybe a bit more if I sold it working with a new ECU.

Thanks so much in advance

I have the exact same issue on my 2.5 tdi. It's the gearbox control unit, Audi said I need a new one and it costs £900... I've found a few between 300-400. Apologies if your in dollars I'm from UK lol. Anyway go on eBay and check for a new unit on there. I've got a garage saying they can repair mine rather than replace it but I have a thread on here asking if that is possible so just waiting on some replies. Hope this gives some help.

Hey thanks for the reply it was useful to hear. I will check out Ebay to see if I can get a new one for my car. If you want my advise I wouldn't bother trying to get it repaired as it has caused me nothing but problems and I now have a bill of £500 for nothing really. If I had just got a new one originally (especially if you have seen them on ebay for £300-£400 any links would be much appreciated?) then I would have been much better off. However I'm sure that there are lots of ppl who have successfully had theirs repaired...

Cheers

I think that Audi should recall them anyway as it's a factory fault from what I can see. It seems to happen to everyone!
