Default DLC connector?

Hey I would like to say that this forum is just about the best of any car manufacturer forum I have ever been a part of.

I recently purchased a 2000 A6 Quattro for my mom and have to drive it across the country to her later in the week.. I went about 200 miles away to pick it up for her and drive it home... no problems there. I started it up the next morning to drive it to work and the CEL came on. It's not blinking so no big deal, but I want to fix it before I give it to her. Anyways it comes on and I go to the local parts store to use their OBD II scanner when I come to realize that the DLC is not in the normal triangle (kinda) shape but a more square purple connector...

Does this vehicle require a different scanner, because some European vehicles aren't OBD II compliant or someone at the store told me it was a service connector for emissions testing. But I don't believe that because the primary function of the OBD II connector and CEL is emissions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!!!

You might be able to use an adapter like this one.

every vehicle made after 1996 has to use the same obd2 connector and it has to be located in around the same are (under drivers side) some scanners work better with different manufactures like the Genesis scanner sucks *** on audi and volkswagen vehicles but it will still work.
