Default Winter Engine Oils

Hi all, i need help, I have a 1988 Audi 80 1.8E the required engine oil weight in the Haynes manuel is 15 40w or 15 50w i can only get 15 50w and the bottle doesn't recomend it for winter driving and living in Sweden with -30 winters i was thinking could i get away with 10 40w as i can get this easyly and its a lower temperature oil. Also can i mix Mineral and Synthetic oils??

I think that 15W-50 is a bit too thick for winter driving in Sweden. Anything special about the 1.8 motor, gas, diesel, etc? Check the owners manual if you have one. According to my 1991 100Q manual, if driving when temps are above 60°F I should be using 15W-40 or 15W-50 and 10W-30 or 10W-40 during the other months unless it is brutally cold then I should use 5W-20 or 5W-30. Now, I use 10W-30 just about all the time, sometimes during the winter I will use 5W-30 even though it doesn’t get that cold in New Jersey.
