Default What Audi I should buy --a Volvo 240 Owner

Hi
I am a Volvo Owner however I have been facinated by Audi's esp their Quattro System .
I own a 1990 Volvo 240 DL . Which is great in many ways . I have been thinkning of acquiring a used Audi .
What car do you think is great with focus on old models pre 1995-96 . My budget is going to be small . I have heard that A90 is great and reliable also .
Are these cars easy to work with. What is average mielage one should expect . For example My 240 has 210 K on it and I expect to go a long way with it.
I usually work myself on the car .
What is the best year to buy and what issues should one look at when buying Audi. Are the parts easily available .

I am actually seeing a 1995 A90 with 120K being sold for 4K. How is that

I will take some time to pickup Audi Stuff hopefully with your help

Regards
Gopesh

I'm a little bias, not a big fan of the 80/90 series due to what I consider poor chassis so I would recommend a 91' 20valver in sedan or wagon form. A small budget (just in my opinion) is never truely realistic especially on any older pre-95 car. No matter what there will be multiple mmechanical items needing repair or replacement and budgeting accordingly is key. I like the 91's because of the performance and I think they look great. You also get pretty much every amenity you could want from heated seats to power everything. Of couse whether these work is another question.

The bottom line for buying an old Audi is pretty much the same as any car-inspect it and do research. I dont see the parts availibility being a problem despite recent news of Audi scrapping the old parts inventory. Most of what you should buy depends on what your budget is. Are we talking 2k or 8k. If you have 8k, buy a 20 valve for 4k in good condition, save the rest to take care of the maint....

Yeah, the 91's are 100 and 200. You would want the 200 though. I think for the budget you could be in trouble. There are definitely ones out there for sale in that range, but they are high mileage cars which most likely need tons of work. The work is hard and expensive even if you are doing it yourself. It would really depend on what you will be using the car for. If you need a daily driver for work or other I would have to be honest and tell you to buy a used Honda or other as for the money you cant go too wrong. There are a lot of sources out there, but forums and lots of reading would be the best. Its really hard to come by material on what owners of older cars go through other than places like this...I would spend some time looking and saving!!!

Actually I thought that earlier Audi's are like Old Volvos interms of reliability price and ease of maintainence.
Anyway I will keep my eyes open for a good deal .
Thanks for your help.

I dont know much about the older Audi's but check out this site

http://www.carsurvey.org/

Its a site that owners have written reviews on their cars, things that they like/things that have gone wrong, if they would buy another one or not.
But for this site, it is important that you focus more on the reviews form your region such as I am from Canada so i only really pay attention to the North America Reviews not the UK or Aus. reviews.
This is because some things may be different on the models, and they have different production lines for different regions so reliability could be better or worse.

Happy Buying!!

Dont know about you, but I like my A90. even though its a front wheel drive. I have already 191K miles and just finished rebuilding the streering rack for 90 dollars.
In any case, its a good car, and probably can be found in area of 3K.

PS my car is 1995 Audi 90 FWD Auto V6 2.8.
This is a bad car, if you comute in busy cities, like New York. I get 11MPG. On highway I get around 18 to 20MPG. and together I get 15MPG
car easily goes over 80MPG, feels solid. Didnt have a radar to go over 90MPG yet.
I took out my car rally, and it fellet like it belongs and all you need is a good navigator and need to be during the day, at night its hard.
