Default How can I tell my starter is gone?

Hi. I posted a message that my car wont start. I think its the starter or the ignition switch. How can I tell? Someone mentioned to remove the ground from the power cable to the starter but I am not sure how to do this. Can someone explain how to do this? Or possibly is it the relay for the starter that is gone and not the starter itself. I live in NYC and I need to move my car on Monday so I dont get a ticket ($65.00)!!! So I want to see if I can fix this myself else I have to bring it to a shop and pay the money...

many thanks,
james

find the starter first ... you are not going to remove the ground (i think you kind of mizzandastud avant) just run a wire from the battery (+) to hte starter (+) for a sec though and see what happens if it moves it's alive if it don't then it's kapput .... ignition swithc -> unplug it from the key cylinder and bridge the 1st and the last positions and see if ti cranks if it don't then look for bad relays fuses and wires if it does crank than the swithch is bad
