HELP! Problems with 1994 90s (runs and dies at stop)
Right now I am struggling with a 1994 90s with slightly more than 100,000 miles. The car has problems starting and remaining running. But mainly the engine dies when the car comes to a stop even after a lengthy run. Right now I cannot get it to start since it died when I came to stop durring a road test. I did this road test after I replaced the oil check valve down between the cylinder heads under the manifold. Since the cars oil seemed a bit thick and dirty, the thought was these became colgged and killed circulation of the oil which then cut the engine. The oil check light was on at the time I made the replacement too. And still is. After I put the engine back together, it started right up and ran in the shop for at least and hour while we tried to determin if the valves were tapping. It seemed to be making a bit more noise at idle than before but this could be attributed to some engine oil flush we used to clean the grime up since the oil was so nasty when I changed it and the filter. Also after I changed the oil/filter I also took one look at the plugs and replaced them. After I put the enging back together I also did a compression check which wasn't stellar but within the oppertating range because it started up after this and ran like I said. The tapping seemed to mellow out and isn't really a concern. I contacted an Audi specialist through someone I know and that person came up with two reason why it might die after bringing the car to a stop. One possibility was the pick-up sensor for the crank and secondly the power bus fuse that controls the ignition and fuel pump. Since none of the fuses seemed to be blown, I am going to tackle the first possiblity tomorrow. However I think there still may be some other situation and this is why I am asking for help from anyone who might have had a similar problem or recognize these symptoms. I tried to give as much information pertaining to the problem but if somone needs to know something I didn't mention, please ask. I found some other possibilities dealing with two recalls on the car, one was the injectors were recalled and the ignition switch recalled. From what I know the ignition switch was replaced but as for the injectors they are stock and need to be gone over again since learning of the recall. Any help will be greatly appreciated....Right now it tries to start but won't fire up and run since it died on the test when I came to a stop.
Thank You,
Chris

RE: HELP! Problems with 1994 90s (runs and dies at stop)
idle control valve and rubber pipe from the air filter to the throttle body comes to mind, check the pipe for splits and the clamps are on tight and the idle control valve check to see if its getting 12 volts when ignition on mine did that and I had to fit a switched live wire to get it working also no fuses blown and very difficult to trace the original wiring from the loom so much simpler to rewire it ( if that's the problem )

RE: HELP! Problems with 1994 90s (runs and dies at stop)
Thanks Dave I'll check that out tomorrow. When I ran it in the garage the idle was fine and even after giving it gas and letting off the idle was fine and the engine never acted up or idled roughly. Even the first few timesI stopped and started when I was test driving the engine stayed running just fine and then abrubtly died shortly after that. I guess what I'm trying to say is the car gave no warning that it was about to die untill I stopped and it just shut off and wouldn't fire back up. Would the idle be rough or anything if the idle control valve was faulty or is it more a matter of either it works or doesn't work? I'll give check everything out againtomorrow and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again for your help.

wow that was a long one .. but anywho like Dave said and the golden rule for older audis when they have any kind of running problems is
Always no ,matter what you know or might think, start looking for vacum leaks and olny after you have absolutly positively made sure that there are not any vacum leaks do you start to concider other possibilities

RE: HELP! Problems with 1994 90s (runs and dies at stop)
Well I got the car running and am happy to report that the reason was a loose ground wire...Now that it's back up and running I am now dealing with an issue I mentioned earlier. The engine seems to be making alot of noise. The damn thing sounds like a diesel when it's running. It sounds like the lifters are tapping constantly. I'm guessing there is an oil flow problem somewhere that isn't allowing enough oil to lubricate the head. I'm going to check the oil pressure soon but just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this problem with the V6 in the 90s. Again the engine has a fairly loud running noise that sounds like the lifters are tapping or something. Also the oil light is on, so I'm not sure if that is an oil pressure light or just a general oil light. The light goes out as the engine build rpms and usually goes away when the RPMs reach 3000 or so and then comes back on when the RPMs dipp under 2000. Also as the engine revs up the metallic noise just gets louder and more painful to hear. On the test drive around the shop the car felt like it had lost much of its power and was really struggling. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

RE: HELP! Problems with 1994 90s (runs and dies at stop)
Hi. Quick question - where do I check for a lose ground wire? . I have been having the same problem - stalling out at stops. The vacuum system seems to be okay. At one point the vacuum tube for the anti-freeze was replaced. Had to pop start the car last Sunday as the engine wont turn over - no response from the starter. I am thinking its all related to a loseground wire.

RE: HELP! Problems with 1994 90s (runs and dies at stop)
My ground wire had a green colored bolt and was towards the back off the engine. Right behind the intake manifold to the left side kinda down between things. Just go over all the little hoses and nuts you can see. Once I got that ground good it runs but is noisey so I need to see if what you guys have been suggesting is the problem. The engine really didn't make the noise before I took the engine apart. I was pretty careful putting it back together but I don't know if something got screwed up or damaged accidently.
