Default engine dying on over-run

I have a 1992 80tdi recently when the car had driven around 50 miles and when i took my foot of the throttle then put the foot down again the engine just died away then all of a sudden came back to life again, this went on for weeks only when the engine was warm, My local garage thought it was a fault with the waste gate sticking, and they stripped the turbo wastegate, but could not see anything wrong, now it is the opposite way, when the engine is cold it keeps doing this dying act, another way around driving with the fault is when the engine dies i dip the clutch in and give it a bit of throttle and it eventually kicks into life again, I have tried changing the fuel filter but it made no difference, my local garage now thinks it could be a sensor somewhere that is causing the fault, but they do not have the electronics to look into it further
Any ideas
thanks
